As we enter one of the best times of year to live in Maryland, I hope we can all take a moment to enjoy the outdoors.  As the seasons begin to change, all will surely welcome the cooler temperatures.   Make the most of this month and make it memorable.  If you haven’t already done so, get out and take your kids to the park, the beach, or any place where you can spend the better part of the day “unconnected” from work.  There are plenty of great days left to enjoy a beautiulf afternoon outside.  Allow yourself to re-energize a bit and just enjoy the gifts of mother nature before they are stored away until next season – you can thank me later!

This was our 12th summer in business this year.  I would like to say a big thank you for helping us get here, and for trusting us as your partner in managing your landscaping.  This has been another great year to be able to be out doing what we love to do, and I am looking forward to many more.  With fall around the corner, we are preparing for the perfect planting season. Wether it is restoring a lawn stressed from the summer heat, or giving the front of a house a facelift with new colorful shrubs and perrenials, this is the best time of year to put some green back into your landscape!

Here are a couple tips for a healthier and greener lawn this fall:

  • Keep your mower deck raised high until the last couple mows of the season.  If you are seeding, mow closer prior to seeding, then raise it back up after germination.  A taller blade of grass means a longer root structure and a healthier lawn!
  • Now is the time for core aeration:  removing small plugs from the lawn allows the intake of essential nutrients into the soil and provides oxygen to the root zone.
  • For areas that are badly damaged or with little turf grass coverage, consider using a power seeder to effectively establish a new lawn.  This is especially important when regular irrigation is not possible.
  • Fertilize once now and then again later in the fall to promote a strong and healthy turf.  Fall fertilization is the most effective and really helps nurture the root system of the cool season grasses we have here in Maryland
  • Be wise when selecting fertilizer.  Unless you need it, choose phosphorous free fertilizers.  Most lawns do not have a deficiency in phosphorous and adding more only creates problems.  A soil test can help best determine where nutrient levels are in your lawn.
  • Irrigate properly.  Two to three times a week is more than enough this time of year.  Aim for 1” of water per week and try to get the soil saturated deep down.

As summer winds down, I want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to service your property so far this year.  I hope we have followed through on providing great service, and an easy and pleasant experience, while working with you to meet your landscape needs.  We are here to help with all of your outdoor landscaping projects.  Whether it’s adding an outdoor living area, or enhancing a small space in the yard, we are to here to bring it to life.   Thanks again and I look forward to helping you with any questions you may have and keeping your lawn and landscape at its best!

Best Wishes,
